Tehran is the capital city of Iran. Around 7.3 million people live in
the city itself, and 11.5 million in the greater metropolitan area
(figures for Jan. 2004). The city extends over an area of 1,500 square
kilometres. Located in north-central Iran, 1,200 metres above sea level
on the slopes of the Alborz Mountains, Tehran enjoys a mild climate.
Mehrabad international airport is just outside the city. An underground
railway, consisting of three lines, was completed in 1999. Tehran is
the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.
